Understanding insurance requirements for KAPI rentals and leases

Important

KAPI is a peer-to-peer car sharing platform. We do not provide insurance coverage. All guests must have valid insurance before renting.

For Guests (Rentals)

Before you can rent a car on KAPI, you must provide proof of insurance that covers:

  • Liability Insurance: Covers damage you may cause to other vehicles, property, or people
  • Collision Coverage: Covers damage to the rental vehicle

Accepted Coverage Options

Personal Auto Insurance

Many personal auto policies extend coverage to rental vehicles. Check with your insurance provider to confirm rental coverage.

Credit Card Coverage

We accept collision coverage provided by credit cards. Note that most credit cards only cover collision (vehicle damage), not liability. You'll still need liability coverage from another source.

Non-Owner Auto Insurance

If you don't own a car, you can purchase a non-owner auto insurance policy that provides liability and collision coverage for rental vehicles.

For Guests (Leases)

Leasing a car through KAPI gives you more flexibility with insurance options:

  • As a lessee, you can obtain your own insurance policy for the vehicle
  • You'll be listed as the primary driver on the policy
  • We can help you find and get insurance for your leased vehicle
  • Proof of insurance must be provided before the lease begins

For Hosts

If you're listing your car on KAPI, you must:

  • Maintain valid auto insurance on your vehicle
  • Ensure your policy allows for car sharing or rental use
  • Some personal policies exclude commercial use — check with your provider
  • Consider a commercial or rideshare policy if sharing your car frequently

Coming Soon: KAPI Insurance

We're partnering with insurance providers to offer trip insurance directly through KAPI. This will make it easier for guests to get coverage without the hassle of checking multiple policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if there's an accident?

Contact emergency services if needed, then document the incident with photos. File a claim with your insurance provider. Notify the host and KAPI support.

Does my credit card provide enough coverage?

Most credit cards only provide collision coverage (damage to the rental car). You'll typically need separate liability coverage from your personal auto insurance or a non-owner policy.

What if I don't have personal auto insurance?

You can purchase a non-owner auto insurance policy, which provides liability and often collision coverage for vehicles you don't own. These policies are relatively affordable if you rent cars frequently.
